Reflection: ACC Intermediate Debating

Last Wednesday, some of the DAV debaters and I went to Mazenod College to partake in the ACC Intermediate Debating Competition, debating against schools like De La Salle, St. Josephs, and St Mary’s College.

We had two teams competing, and we were going in strong, motivated to do well. There were three debates, the first one we had weeks to prepare for, on the topic “That the Olympics should be held in one place every year”, where one team was arguing for the affirmative side, and the other on the negative side.

The second debate, which we only had an hour to prepare for, was “That schools should be prohibited from issuing detentions”, and unfortunately one of our teams (the one I was in) won automatically as our opponents didn’t show up. It was still fun though, as we got to argue against the adjudicator, who otherwise would’ve been judging our debate.

The final topic we also only had one hour of preparation for, and we were arguing “That we should ban advertisements of meat and dishes containing meat (e.g. beef burgers)”. Overall, Whitefriars did really well. My team ended up winning two out of our three debates, and we came second in Division 2 because of it. We also had the most points out of every school in the competition, so it was definitely a moral win in my books. The boys and I had such a fun time and can’t wait for the senior tournaments in the years to come!”

The students that participated were:

  • Luka Ivanusic (9 A2)
  • Lucas Masciulli (10 A3)
  • Alex Griffiths (10 A5)
  • Josh Lyons (10 A3)
  • Leo Sedony (10 A5)
  • Matthew Haste (10 C3)
