Narbethong CFA Working Bee with Year 11 VCE Vocational Major Students

Our Year 11 VCE Vocational Major students recently had a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community and get hands-on experience in an unforgettable Working Bee at the Narbethong CFA Fire Station. This one-day event was much more than just community service—it was a valuable chance for students to meet the assessment requirements of their Unit 2 curriculum by engaging in real-world, vocational activities.

Throughout the day, students participated in various fire management and station upkeep tasks, each contributing to the critical work that keeps the Narbethong CFA ready for emergencies. Their activities included a fire management burn, learning firsthand about fire safety and controlled burning techniques essential for preventing bushfires in the region. They also pitched in on a renovation project, putting up plywood to better insulate the fire station, making it a more efficient space for the dedicated CFA volunteers.

In addition to these tasks, students got their hands dirty with some serious gardening, tidying the grounds, and performing general cleaning around the station. These jobs not only improved the appearance and functionality of the fire station but also fostered a strong sense of teamwork and responsibility among the students.

To wrap up the day, the CFA crew treated our students to a crash course in firefighting! They learned how to handle firefighting hoses, took a tour of the fire truck, and got a deeper understanding of how firefighting equipment is used to protect the community. This practical, hands-on session brought classroom learning to life, helping students connect theory with practice and see the impact of their efforts in a real-world setting.

Thank you to the Narbethong CFA for hosting us and giving our students a memorable, educational experience that not only fulfills their curriculum but also strengthens their connection to the community.

Special thanks go to Andrew Buchan (CFA) and Aidan Buchan and Stephanie Dekazos (College teachers) for organising this opportunity.
