During the term, our Year 10 Science Classes undertook a practical task which extracted DNA from the cells of strawberries. Having spent numerous weeks learning about genetics, DNA along with Mitosis and Meiosis, the boys were keen to ‘get their hands dirty’ and learn kinaesthetically within our wonderful science labs.
Many of the boys executed fantastic scientific methods and were able to effectively execute the procedures required to extract the DNA – as can be seen in the photos. Robust discussions were then held around the importance of tracking and mapping chromosomes and examining human genetics in helping to find cures for major diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, amongst others.
A favourite lesson for both the teachers and students in this exciting unit of work, well done to everyone involved!
